Obesity Stats

I found some interesting stats about obesity which we could use in the narration-

New Ideas

Hey,

After Friday I've come up with a few ideas to extend our documentary.

I think looking at how we use our time in general rather than just to do with food is really good. Expanding on the point of how nobody in suits had the time to talk to us when we were trying to interview them.

I've had an idea about showing two different days, one of a person who has a very busy lifestyle and one who has a more relaxed one. I thought we could maybe do this by using split screen. For example we could start with one screen showing someone constantly pressing snooze on their alarm compared with someone waking up straight away. Then they could describe how they didn't have time for breakfast. The other screen could show them getting up in time to make a proper breakfast.

We can show this also by the first person would take two hours out of their day to go to the gym. Then the second person would have already done their exercise by walking and using the stairs. Therefore having time to go straight home after work and spend time with their partner/family.

We can use the interviews of people in a rush at the start to introduce our argument then back this up by showing the difference between the two lifestyles.

To show we are trying to compare them we could also use the same voice for both parts of the split screen.

Hey guys, here is the script i drafted in the group meeting with a few changes which outlines our project and shows where we are going with it etc.

Script

Story

- Person eating breakfast [V/O – Why do we eat so unhealthily?]

Interviews

Questions

- What do you do for a living?

- How often do you cook?

- How important is healthy eating to you?

- Why do you eat what you do?

Finish with one person saying, “I don’t have time when I finish work” etc.

Story

- [TITLE] Person comes home from work.

- Cooks ready meal in the microwave and feels down.

- [Film Rewinds]

- [TITLE] Person comes home from work.

Storyboard

Hey,

Yeah i think the storyboard is good, it shows the point we are trying to make clearly.
Now we need to think about the start of the film and how we are going to approach showing what we think is bad about our eating habits.

Some of the ideas we had today I think were good;
-Asking the public about their eating habits, how often they cook etc.
-Intercutting sequences of packaged and fast food to illusrtate the point.
-Making sure we have a clear point of view and stick to it, this is really important to make sure our documentary works.

See you Friday.

Hey guys

heres a story board ive worked on. currently working on monolouge but all will be done by end of easter so we can start filming. the monolouge will include facts and stats about the food that is being prepared etc and such.

does anyone have a light open plan kitchen area that we could use to film in?

if anyone has any input on this let me know so i can make changes.

thanks, hope everyone has a good easter

Our point of view

I think its really important that we know exactly what point we want to make with the film, because I think our idea has changed from the original one.

I know we want to show two opposing ways in which we prepare and eat a meal. But I think we need to decide if we want to talk about why it is that we choose between the different ways. So for example it could just be that we are lazy or it could be that we just dont have time.

Ive been thinking of ways in which we could do this, and I thought maybe follow someone over a week on what they eat and when. This would show us what effects this. It might be a rubbish idea but i thought of someone maybe doing a blog about what they eat. But I don't really know if thats any good, if anyone else has an idea of how we can show it?

Shooting

Hey guys, after we spoke and looking at what you have posted about shot types. i feel like it may be beneficial if everyone has seen the films, requiem for a dream. and the film spun. these films both use extreme close ups with clean precise sound to create an effect. i feel like in our piece if the monologue cuts out at times and we can have a fast paced montage of cutting carrots etc with clean crisp sound intercut with other parts of cooking it can be made to look cinematically beautiful from that sense. im working on the monologue atm, i will post some of it on here tomorrow. if anyone is free over easter aswel it could be beneficial to meet up and maybes film some of the close up shots ,

This article is focussing on packaging being misleading. The guidelines towards eating cereal recommend an amount which is half of what most people actually eat themselves. This is fooling people into believing what they are eating is better for them than it actually is. The only way to strictly follow the guidelines would be to actually weigh out the amount of cereal you are eating. I found this piece of information is quite interesting considering the companies are legally allowed to do this despite how misleading it is.

Shots - Examples

After our meeting I wanted to find some visual example of the kind of shots we were talking about. I think it would be best to make sure the shots of the two different types of meals we are trying to represent are tightly framed. This will ensure the focus is on the preperation of the food and not the character. Ive tried to find some examples of this used, the first one i thought about was parts of Gordon Ramsays show. The camera focuses alot on the food, there are alot of closeups. Ive posted the link of a video on youtube. Its obviously not exactly how we would do it but you get the idea.

Ideas after tutorial

I think developing our inital idea and looking at eating habits and why we need so much fast microvable food is really interesting. I also think it will give us more to actually film rather than just simply packaging.

Ive found a few interesting articles on the British Library website about how our eating habits have change over recent years, here is the link;

http://www.bl.uk/learning/citizenship/foodstories/Accessible/eatinghabits/changesineatinghabits.html

The way some of the writers have looked at their childhood eating habits compared to now is really interesting. We could start looking at how our own habits have changed and why.

Problem with my first post.

for some reason you need to highlight the black on my first post as it is invisable for some strange reason. sorry.

Project Statement - Group Project

For this exercise we have decided to focus on consumerism but mainly on consumerism within the food sector and how marketing persuades our purchases of what we eat. Why do we purchase Mc Donald's over Burger King or Orange Juice over Coke? Is it because it’s the 'healthier' option? People at Marketing are so willing to give out information such as 'sugar free' and brand it all over their products. What they tell us the public and what they choose to leave out is the big problem.

With this project we have decided to approach it from a reflexsive style, by using a voiceover and no presenter taking up valuable watching space it will allow the audience to concentrate on our visuals and voiceover. In the video we will show close ups of products and a mixture of statistics of the sales of products over recent years. In the video we plan to include images of people's organs which have been subjected to this 'healthy' foods.

The intentions of this video are to provoke emotion in the audience and to educate them through content but also to entertain them through the experimental reflexsive style. Stylistically the piece has been inspired by the shorts such as Sunless and Island of Flowers. Both have influenced different aspects of the film, The Island of flowers inspired the relationship between video and sound. Both alone are very powerful pieces in this film, which is what we want to achieve also. The visuals in the island of flowers is of a similar style to what we plan to create, a piece which without any voiceover can be viewed and affect the audience in near enough the same way that to give them a pleasant journey at the start though images which they recognise then to lead them on to images which is affecting them in ways that they weren't aware of. The structure of the sound in the piece will be dominated by voiceover and this will break down the information which is on the screen at the time and challenge the audience and their knowledge of what they eat, what's in their food and the cause and affect it has on them, their children and the rest of humanity.

Alright guys.

hey everyone, sorry i missed the seminar on friday, i had been rather ill for the past few days. anyways like what we talked about during the week at the meeting, its best if we create a documentary with a reflexive style. i feel with the subject matter of consumerism and marketing that this will allow us to get the best out of our documentary idea. i feel like we should go about it with the idea of why do people buy what they do. is it the wording of the marketing? are the promoters and advertisers doing too good of a job?

well here are the photos i took the other day. couldnt get any in side of shops with as short notice. so i took photos of large displays which sound like they have a great deal on until you read the small print.

VIEW IMAGES IN LARGE TO SEE SMALL PRINT.

I also think it could be good manipulating current products and question the audience as to whether they would still buy the item.
